PBL members participate in annual ICCCTSO conference in Springfield
Around 50 students and advisers, consisting of four Career & Technical Student Organizations (CTSO's) attended the annual Illinois Coordinating Council for Career & Technical Student Organizations (ICCCTSO) conference in Springfield on Sept. 11-13 at the Crowne Plaza.
FBLA, HOSA, PBL, and SkillsUSA all brought representatives to attend this three day intense conference. Members were able to participate in team building activities, visit the Governor's Mansion, visit the State Capitol, and hear from motivational speakers.
The conference started on Friday evening with an opening dinner that included an opening speaker, David Mouser. Mouser was a great speaker and works with kids every day. He talked about his times in FFA and really tried to tie our every day life experiences together with our CTSO and taught us about leadership and how important it is to be a leader. The night continued with a leadership session about team building and responsibilities, as well as a couple of games, including team challenges.
Sessions continued on Saturday morning about presentation skills and finding motivation, before heading to the Governor's Mansion for an etiquette luncheon. Everyone was able to explore the mansion and learn about some of the history of Illinois . A parliamentary procedures session was then held in the Senate Chambers at the State Capitol after the etiquette luncheon. At the Capitol, students were able to debate issues and discover what it is like to be a Senator during session. Saturday evening rapped up with a leadership session by motivational speaker Rhett Laubach from Oklahoma . He helped the CTSO officers learn more about each other and discover what it is like to lead groups by playing leadership games that involved team work.
Sunday morning started with more leadership sessions beginning with an organizational maze, where students were split into two groups and had to follow the leader through a maze, and everyone had to travel the same route. A closing luncheon was held after the leadership games in which speaker Rhett Laubach wrapped up the leadership weekend and further developed students into learning what it is like to lead a group and operate as a team.
Patty Hendrickson has been running ICCCTSO for several years and helped lead the nearly 50 participants through a fun filled weekend of leadership training. She also taught everyone several games and talked about leadership throughout the weekend. ICCCTSO concluded with a group send off that put everyone together in a circle and sharing memories they had. Each member was provided a necklace with small strings of yarn attached that could be pulled from the bottom of the necklace. People walked around the room, with the idea of getting rid of all of your strings while people tied strings onto your necklace and shared memories.
Many laughs occurred throughout the weekend, but many realized at that moment that this was the end and that they would not all be together in that setting again. Sharing the memories that will last a lifetime about the weekend certainly happened and will continue to occur as students look back on this conference, and all of the memories from it, in the future.
